Package thefts continue past peak shipping season in Boston

BOSTON – We’re more than a month past peak shipping season, but residents of some Boston neighborhoods say the problem of stolen packages hasn’t let up.

Police have surveillance video of a man who appears to walk straight onto Joe Therrien’s porch in Hyde Park and take a package.

“I got an alert around 10:30 that Fed Ex delivered my package – terrific then an alert about 12:30 that someone was on my porch taking my package,” Therrien said. “Nothing I could really do until I got home and checked and made sure it was definitely gone and showed police the video.”

This theft took place during the day, and video shows a man with a similar look to the suspect in at least one robbery from November in the same area.

“Police recognized him when I showed them the video,” Therrien said.

It’s unclear if it’s the same person – but the idea that the crime continues to happen is frustrating for the neighborhood.

To help solve the problem, Amazon has placed lockers at some businesses in the area where packages can be dropped off securely then picked up at a later time by using a code tied to the buyer’s account.

Police also suggest having packages delivered to work, or to the home of a trusted neighbor who is home during the day.
