Newbury man sets himself on fire at gas station

NEWBURY, Mass. — A Newbury man was taken to the hospital after lighting himself on fire at a gas station.

Newbury Police received a call Saturday afternoon from a customer at the Ampet Service Station on High Road about the incident.

The responding officer tried to put the flames out as the 24-year-old ran away, and the officer eventually tackled him to the ground to put out the fire.

The man was transported to Ana Jacques Hospital, and then airlifted to a Boston hospital for life threatening injuries.

The officer involved was brought to Ana Jacques Hospital as a precaution.
