After violent weekend, MSP deploys gang unit, CAT team to Brockton

BROCKTON, Mass. - Following a violent weekend in the city of Brockton, State Police will be issuing their gang unit and Community Action Team (CAT) to patrol the streets.

Plymouth DA Timothy Cruz said the request comes after a streak of violent incidents happened throughout the weekend, where multiple shots were fired, a 71-year-old man was grazed by a bullet inside his home, and a 24-year-old man was murdered in broad daylight.

The increase in police presence in the city is an effort to curb violence as the State Police, along with the Plymouth County District Attorney's office, continue to investigate those incidents.

"In response to several gun-related incidents within the city, I have requested additional State Police support,” DA Cruz said. “The added police presence on city streets will hopefully send a deterrent message to those acting unlawfully, but also reassure Brockton residents that they do not have to accept gun-related violence as a fact of everyday life.”

DA Cruz has received approval from the Massachusetts State Police to use their Troop D CAT team, the MSP gang unit and additional State Police uniform patrols in Brockton on Monday.

On Wednesday, the DA's office will be hosting its Operation Safe Streets community meeting at the Armone School in Brockton at 6:30 p.m. At the meeting, authorities will be able to talk to Brockton residents and answer any and all questions or concerns they may have.

Anyone with information regarding the recent shootings in Brockton is encouraged to contact State Police immediately at 508-894-2600.
