Massachusetts Salvation Army is $1M short of fundraising goal, officials say

BOSTON — Local Salvation Army officials are saying Massachusetts is shy of $1 million dollars away from meeting their statewide fundraising goal.

With only two days left in their campaign, the organization is urging people all around the state to donate to Red Kettles.

Last year, The Salvation Army provided over 2.4 million meals and helped nearly half a million Massachusetts residents in need. Funds collected stay local and help families in need at Christmas and all year round.

Bell ringers in Fanueil Hall say its actually one of the best spots in town for collections thanks to all the shoppers and tourists, but as a whole, the state is falling short.

Local Salvation Army Major Edgar George tells Boston 25 News the fundraising goal in Massachusetts is set at $3.5 million dollars - the same goal they have had for the past few years, according to a spokesman.

George says one of the biggest problems is that people aren't carrying around as much cash as they used to.

"We are a people of faith so we are looking for our Christmas miracle as some would say and we're going to hold out hope until the last penny is covered tomorrow evening," said George.

Some towns where money has been toughest to come by for The Salvation Army include Malden, which is down 50 percent from the goal, followed by Lawrence, down 40 percent, Athol, down 30 percent and Plymouth, which is down 23 percent.

The state as a whole is down 11 percent compared to last year, the Kettles specifically are down 11 percent.

"I feel like I see them all over town but I think it's a good thing if you can just spare some change when you're walking by," said Claire Crowley.

While shoppers may still hear bells ringing tonight, collections will end on Saturday night.

“With so many individuals and families in need, it is essential that we meet our Red Kettle Campaign goal this year,” said Major David B. Davis, Massachusetts Divisional Commander. “Each year, the citizens of Massachusetts make it possible for us to help support those in need, we are asking that they give generously to ensure service delivery is maintained again this year.”

Last year in Massachusetts, The Salvation Army provided over 2.4 million meals, nearly 200,000 nights of shelter, over 67,000 days of childcare and 343,333 Christmas gifts for children.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is urging people all over the state to give the kettles a boost if possible.

"We're asking people to help The Salvation Army, they do incredible work in this state, you know, whenever we need them not just the holiday season, you need them, you call them and they are there," said Mayor Walsh.

If you want to donate, you don't need to go out hunting for a little red kettle to deposit your change in, you can text KETTLE17 to 41444 to donate as much as you'd like.
