WESTWOOD, Mass. — Investigators were back on sight Thursday after a man was killed in a fire at a home in Westwood Wednesday evening.

Crews were called to 70 Tamarack Rd. around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to investigate reports of a fire, and when they arrived at the home they found heavy smoke and flames coming from inside.

Firefighters from several communities responded to the scene to assist Westwood in extinguishing the flames.

A man was pulled from the burning home, but despite efforts by first responders at the scene he was pronounced dead at a hospital. He has been identified as 47-year-old Michael Lennon.

The closest fire hydrant to the home was buried under a pile of snow when crews arrived. Firefighters had to dig out the hydrant before they could begin battling the flames.

The Westwood Fire Department wants to remind people to dig out fire hydrants.

One dog inside the home was able to escape the flames and has been taken to animal control.

Another pet remains unaccounted for.

Lennon was the only person inside the home when the fire broke out.

The cause is still under investigation, but investigators have said the fire is not considered suspicious.
