Drivers reminded about what to do in an emergency after girl killed on Mass Pike

UPTON, Mass. — After a tragic accident that left a 10-year-old girl dead when she was hit by a car on the side of the Mass. Pike., drivers are being reminded about important safety procedures for when they have car trouble.

State Police told Boston 25 News that a driver had pulled to the left breakdown lane to assist another vehicle with a flat tire. While pulled over, the young girl got out of the car and was standing on the side of the road when a Tahoe swerved into the breakdown lane and hit her.

The Massachusetts RMV tells drivers that when they have a breakdown they should pull as far off to the side of the road as possible. If they are unable to pull off the pavement, everyone in the vehicle should get out and move away from the breakdown lane, off the side of the road.

Drivers are also advised to turn on emergency and interior lights, tie a white cloth to the antenna and raise the vehicle’s hood to make the car more visible to other drivers and signal passing emergency vehicles that they are having a problem.
