Girl hit, killed while standing outside car on Mass Pike

UPTON, Mass. — State police are investigating a horrific crash on the Mass Pike that left a 10-year-old girl dead.

The crash was reported just before 6 p.m. Sunday near the North Street overpass in Upton.

Police said the girl was riding in a Camry when the car pulled over to help a friend in another vehicle with a flat tire.

Investigators said the girl was standing outside the car when she was hit by a Chevy Tahoe.

Police said the driver of the Tahoe swerved to the left into the breakdown lane to avoid colliding with another car that had suddenly slowed down.

The unidentified girl was taken to a hospital where she died.

A 1-year-old was also in the Camry, but was not injured.

Police said the girl’s family is from Maryland.
