Constant bomb threats frustrating, worrying parents in Waltham

WALTHAM, Mass. — Bomb threats were made to a local school district, one that has already received dozens of previous threats.

Parents have told Boston 25 News they're not only afraid, they're frustrated by what they say is a lack of information.

“I’m scared. I'm in panic mode. How are my children going to feel? I don't want them to feel uneasy about going to school,” parent Ashley Hession said.

Wednesday morning, Hession received another alert from the Waltham School District about bomb threats emailed to four public schools.

It's an alert she’s received before. Waltham police investigated 24 emailed bomb threats during the first week of school. And in June, police investigated another series of threats.

“It's very serious. It's very disconcerting that people can just fool around with people's lives,” Waltham Mayor Jeanette McCarthy said.

She said the police department has even added extra staff to respond to these continuous threats.

So far, police haven't made any arrests. They told Boston 25 they are searching for the source of these emails; but they declined to comment on camera about the investigation.

Instead, police issued a statement that reads in part:

“The number of bomb threats have been extensive with threats targeting many public school buildings, government buildings, private schools, group homes along with private residences."

Hession says she applauds the police effort, but wants the city to be more transparent. She told us until parents are looped in on the process, she'll continue to worry.

“It almost feels like they're not taking this seriously. I think it is serious. I'm the one sending my children to school every day. I'm the one that has to sit for hours and worry. It's not fair,” she said.

Mayor McCarthy says the city will hold a public meeting October 11 at Kennedy Middle School. Police and the superintendent will also be there to answer any questions.
