14 firefighters taken to hospital after fire in Cranston, R.I. business

CRANSTON, R.I. – More than a dozen firefighters were taken to the hospital Monday night after a fire at a chemical plating company in Cranston.

Police were called to Prosys Finishing Technologies on Elmwood Avenue Monday evening. The quickly evacuated a jewelry company that shares the same building and a day care next door.

“It became more hazardous when we found out that chemicals had been disturbed and containers had been broken or breached,” Chief Bill McKenna said.

A hazmat team worked through the evening trying to determine what chemicals the firefighters may have been exposed to.

Out of the 14 firefighters sent to the hospital, most were sent just for evaluation although one reported difficulty breathing and another had an ankle injury.

Firefighters said they don’t believe there were any hazardous materials in the air that would cause any issues for the community.
