Hospital employee fired, charged after allegedly hiding recording device in bathroom

BURLINGTON, Mass. -- An employee at Lahey Hospital in Burlington has been fired after allegedly hiding a recording device in one of the bathrooms.

According to a hospital spokesperson, a pen containing a recording device was discovered during a routine cleaning of an employee bathroom last week.

Officials identified the former employee as 21-year-old Michael Mcdermott of Tewksbury.

"I don't think anyone should be spying on anyone," Randall Bird said. "We don't have enough privacy in our lives to begin with, let alone in a bathroom when you're most vulnerable."

Mcdermott has been charged with three counts of photographing an unsuspecting nude person and possession of a wiretap device.

Burlington police were notified of the discovery and the hospital spokesperson told Boston 25 News a thorough search did not turn up any additional recording devices.

According to the spokesperson, the device had only been in the restroom for a short period of time and no patients or visitors were impacted.

Mcdermott's arraignment will be scheduled at a later date.
