Sony Michel: "Just coach me, Coach."

FOXBORO — Sony Michel seems to be embracing his role as a rookie on the New England Patriots.

The running back reiterated how important it is for him to soak up all he can during his first professional offseason during day two of minicamp on Wednesday afternoon.

"That has kind of been my focus," Michel said. "To get as much coaching as I can. My mindset is 'just coach me, coach.'"

The Georgia graduate is open to expanding his game and understands there's room for improvement in every facet.

"I'm trying to do my job the best that I can to help the team," Michel said. "It's how devoted I am to this program and this process."

And he's not afraid of clocking overtime, either.

“You have to be willing to study as much as you need to be prepared when you come on the field,” the rookie said.

It seems like Michel has also already caught on to the Patriot and Bill Belichick way.

The head coach decided not to assign the rookies jersey numbers in hopes to prevent their focus from shifting to trivial things and remind them that they still must earn their spots on the roster.

Michel was temporarily given No. 51 to wear for OTAs and minicamp and he’s just fine with it.

“This is my number,” he said with a smile. “This is the number I’m wearing right now so this is my number.”

That go-with-the-flow and coachable mentality has Michel fitting right in with those who have been successful Patriots in the past. Belichick is constantly stressing that every player on his team is just as important as the next.

Earlier Wednesday morning, during Belichick’s press conference, he said that there is no difference with Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman back on the field together.

“We don’t have starters or stars or first-teams,” the head coach said.

And if that’s the case, then Sony Michel has as good of a shot as anyone else to make an impact on New England’s offense this upcoming season.
