The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey joins Austin Bumpus on the seventh episode of Expand On That, a weekly Boston 25 sports podcast.
McCaffrey discusses an article she wrote on the MLB's hopes for expansion as they prepare to send the Red Sox and Yankees to London for an international series. (:50 to 4:15).
The two then talk about Alex Cora's performance through two months, and McCaffrey follows the trend of Expand On That guests and gives her own grade for the Red Sox manager (4:40 to 7:18).
With injuries all over the lineup over the last month, McCaffrey and Bumpus debate whether the depth is there to make a run in September and October if injuries arise (7:20 to 9:15).
Pitching and batting seem to have flipped over the last year, with the bats coming alive through two months. McCaffrey gives her thoughts on whether the pace can be continued throughout the season (9:16 to 11:47).
As trade deadline rumors inevitably begin, McCaffrey projects whether or not the team will make moves in the next month and a half (11:48 to 13:45).
Butch Stearns then interviews Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland to talk about his return to the team this past offseason, and gets his thoughts on Cora, the Hanley Ramirez situation and on J.D. Martinez's hot start in 2018 (13:46 to 20:30).
McCaffrey and Bumpus then give their opinions on the Ramirez release, wondering if it was the right move or not (20:31 to 23:40).
To wrap up, the two give their way-too-early predictions for the rest of the season (23:41 to 25:50).
