Wynn proposal for Everett casino deemed suitable

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has issued a positive determination of suitability for a Wynn Resorts casino proposal.

In a written order released Friday, Chairman Stephen Crosby and the gaming commissioners approved the Everett proposal's Phase 1 application. Phase 1 focuses on the suitability of the applicants and its "qualifiers," including its entities and individuals, to hold a gaming license.

Wynn must now enter a second phase application, which evaluates the proposal's site specifics, including site, design, finance, operation, and community mitigation. Final applications are due by Tuesday.

Wynn is expected to be in competition for the sole eastern Massachusetts resort casino license with Mohegan Sun, which was given the green light by the commission to pursue a casino in Revere pending a vote on the project by Revere residents next year.

Everett City Councilor Mike McLaughlin released a statement Friday that read in part:

As I read the Gaming Commission decision today, I applaud their tact and fairness in this major stepping stone for the Wynn Casino project and the City of Everett. Today the commission found Wynn suitable to hold a gambling license in Massachusetts. I look forward to the next few months leading up too the May 2014, decision when I feel very strong we will be giving the Region A Casino License.
