Wynn casino project in spotlight after 2 construction worker deaths

The investigation continues into the death of construction worker at the Wynn casino this week.

Boston 25 News has learned a second worker died several weeks after sustaining a head injury back in December.

According to a person familiar with the case, this second worker was not hurt at the site where the casino is being built in Everett, but he was working for the construction project when he was injured, about a mile away. A spokesperson with the Wynn casino says the man was hurt near a dock where workers board barges along the river.

According to a person familiar with the case said the worker - who was said to be in his 20s or 30s - suffered a head injury on Dec. 16 when he was hit by an excavation bucket. He was placed in a medically induced coma, but was eventually released to go back home. He was expected to come back to work, however, he suffered a blood clot about 13 weeks after he was hurt. He died on March 24.

A Wynn casino spokesperson sent Boston 25 News the following statement Thursday afternoon:

"We take it very hard when anyone related to our project loses their life, whether the injuries were sustained on our site or not. This incident is particularly tragic as the worker was recovering. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and co-workers."

It's unknown if the man died from complication related to his injuries or if the blood clot was unrelated.

OSHA still has an open case on the incident that led up to his injuries.

Steven Buckley is a personal injury attorney and has experience with cases involving construction accidents. Buckley says in a potential lawsuit, the worker's family would have to prove the work-related injuries cause his death.

"You would have to, in the first instance, come in with a medical opinion that said that reason that the death was caused by the work injury even though it was removed by some period of time," said Buckley.

The worker's name has not been released.

Boston 25 News reached out to the two local construction companies involved in the investigation - S&P New England and Charter Contracting - but we have not heard back.
