Human remains found in burning car in Hope Cemetery

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Worcester police are investigating after human remains were discovered in a burning car at a Worcester cemetery.

On Tuesday morning, Worcester Police say they were called to Hope Cemetery for a car fire. Police found a sedan in the back of the cemetery engulfed in flames.

After the fire was put out, officers found human remains inside the car. That person has not been identified, but investigators said they do know who owns the vehicle.

Police are calling the death suspicious, but they have not called it a murder. Despite much of the potential evidence being damaged in the fire, they are not giving up hope.

“Our investigators are well trained and they know what they’re doing and will get whatever they can out of this,” Police Lt. Sean Murtha said.

The victim has not been identified in any way, investigators would not comment on the person's gender, age or cause of death.

“These are things that the investigation will probably reveal but I can’t say right now there’s a lot that we need to find out first," Murtha said.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 508-799-8651.
