Worcester putting in bid for new Cannabis Control Commission headquarters

WORCESTER, Mass. — Worcester may become the site for the new Cannabis Control Commission state headquarters soon.

City Chief Development Officer Michael E. Traynor said Friday that the city is looking at pitching Union Station as the next landing spot for the commission's offices when proposals for office space begin. The move would add 50 employees to the building, with the commission stationed on the second floor.

The commission is currently stationed in temporary offices in Boston's Financial District until their lease runs out in May 2019, and is looking for 13,000 square feet of office space for their new landing spot on a 10-year lease.

The Cannabis Control Commission voted earlier this week to make Worcester their permanent headquarters for easy access to public transportation, along with a satellite office in Boston.

Union Station has been seeing a lot of interest recently, with the Worcester Police Department's announcement that they're opening a precinct at the station soon.

If the bid goes through for the Cannabis Control Commission, Traynor said Worcester will work to fill the rest of the open space in the station.
