Weekend Worcester Line service being replaced with shuttle buses

BOSTON — Starting May 26th, the MBTA will replace the weekend Worcester Line train service with free buses for 11 weekends.

According to a press release, the temporary switch is to accommodate the installation of federally mandated Positive Train Control (PTC) infrastructure.

PTC is a safety control system designed to reduce train speeds as needed and prevent train-on-train collisions.

The first of two phases will run through May 26 to June 17 with free bus service replacing the trains between Worcester and Framingham stations.

The second phase will be from June 23rd to August 5th, with free bus service available between Framingham and Wellesley Farms with the bus also connecting to the Green Line at Riverside Station.

During the second stretch of free bus rides, there will be no weekend train service between Framingham and South Stations.

Train service between Worcester and Framingham during these weekends will also be free with a standard one-way Green Line fare at Riverside Station costing $2.25 on a CharlieCard or $2.75 with cash or CharlieTicket.

The replacement bus schedule will be similar to the Worcester Line weekend train schedule, but just to be safe you should check the MBTA website for exact bus departure times.
