‘Victoria will be playing here:' Playground dedicated to Marathon survivor killed in crash

BOSTON — ‘Victoria will be playing here:’ Playground dedicated to Marathon survivor killed in crash

A new playground at the Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester was dedicated Friday to the memory of Victoria McGrath.

Victoria’s Playground was named in honor of the Marathon bombing survivor who died in a drunk driving accident in Dubai.

An organization called Where Angels Play partnered with the Boston Fire Department to honor the memory of Victoria McGrath and volunteers came from all over the world helped build the playground.

“It’s our way of giving back to thank the City of Boston…our hearts are here, Victoria’s heart and memory are going to live in this playground,” her mother, Jill, said.

Victoria loved children and spent time working with special needs children, her mother explained.

“It’s something Victoria would really like. We can feel her presence here,” Jill said.  “Victoria will be playing here.”

McGrath was a business administration and accounting student at Northeastern University when her legs were injured by shrapnel in the Boston Marathon bombing.

Three years after the bombing, the 23-year-old was in Dubai on personal trip when she died in the car wreck.

Her parents, from Weston, Conn., were at the ground-breaking Friday morning to honor their daughter.

“We’d like to thank the Where Angels Play people…they’re a great bunch of people,” said Victoria’s father, Jim. “A lot of people to thank.”
