Steelers to don 'bumblebee' throwback uniforms one last time against Jets

PITTSBURGH — Sunday will be the last time Pittsburgh Steelers fans see the team’s 1934 throwback uniforms, otherwise known as the “bumblebee” uniforms, on the field.

Bob Labriola, of Steelers.com, reported Friday that the black-and-gold-striped uniforms will no longer be worn after the Steelers' Week 5 game against the New York Jets at Heinz Field.

“This will be the last time we wear them,” Steelers President Art Rooney II told Labriola.

The throwback uniforms debuted in 2012 as a tribute to the team’s history during its 80th anniversary season. Labriola reported that once an NFL team selects a throwback jersey, it must make a five-year commitment to it.

“Next year, we will not have a throwback jersey to wear. We are evaluating what we will do in the future. We have some ideas and plans, but we’re really not ready to reveal those yet in terms of what the next throwback will look like,” Rooney said. “This throwback has been a success from a lot of different standpoints. Even though some people didn’t like it, the majority of our fans did like it and a lot of them bought the jersey. It’s been a fun uniform to have.”
