Town says mansion where murder happened was rented illegally

LYNNFIELD, Mass. — The town of Lynnfield is telling a mansion owner to stop renting out his home after a murder happened at the home over the weekend.

Early Sunday morning, 33-year-old Kevian Heath of Randolph was fatally shot while attending a party at a mansion on Needham Road. The owner of the mansion said he had rented it out to people from the South Boston area for the weekend.

The town says the way the owner, Alex Styller, was renting out his home violates zoning by-laws. The town is giving the owner 30 days to remove his home from vacation home rental sites or they are taking him to court. The $3.3 million dollar home was listed on the home-rental website Airbnb.

This week, the town of Lynnfield issued Styller a cease and desist order, saying in part:  "A review of the 'Airbnb" website discloses that you are offering to make the premises, in whole or in part, available for lodging purposes on a short-term rental basis. Under zoning law, such a use would either be a 'hotel' use or a "lodging or rooming house use."

Lynnfield officials said that's forbidden in the neighborhood.

On the home's Airbnb listing, it says that parties aren't allowed at the home unless the owner, Styller, approves. Styller said on Sunday that it was supposed to be a 20 person college reunion party. Some of the people in attendance were off-duty Boston police officers.

Police are continuing to search for the killer.
