Taunton schools to reopen Wednesday after threatening note found

TAUNTON, Mass. — Two schools in Taunton that were closed after a threatening note was found will reopen on Wednesday, according to police.

Taunton Public Schools said an employee at the high school found an anonymous and threatening note at the close of the school day Monday.

"A collective decision was made, based on the preliminary investigation, to cancel school at Taunton High School and adjacent Parker Middle school due to today’s date being written on the note," district officials wrote in a press release. "Additionally, the decision was made not to hold classes on Tuesday in order to give the Taunton Police Department time to investigate and evaluate the threat."

That note, according to police, specified Tuesday’s date, and a source told Boston 25 News that the note had specific names on it.

That discovery prompted an immediate call to the superintendent and police.

The investigation will continue, and that’s why both Taunton High School and Parker Middle School were closed Tuesday.

But, police said, both schools would reopen Wednesday.

A high school senior and her mother spoke with Boston 25 News about the cancellation.

“I think it’s crazy,” student Gabrielle Fagundes said. “Why would someone do that? That’s so scary.”

“I’m nervous,” her mother, Susan Fagundes, said. “I wish school was over so I wouldn’t have to worry.”

The rest of Taunton Public Schools are open Tuesday. The closures only impact the high school and Parker Middle School.

Taunton High School will make up the lost learning time by turning two half-days at the end of June into full days.

The plans for the middle school to make up classes has not been determined.

The investigation is continuing, and no arrests have been made.
