Suspected drunk driver leaves Medway mother fighting for her life

MEDWAY, Mass. -- A mother of three from Medway is in critical condition after she was hit by a suspected drunk driver early Sunday morning in Providence, Rhode Island.

Rhode Island State Police said the crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on I-95 South.

A friend told Boston 25 News Andrea Bosworth was driving home with another friend when she had to pull her Jeep over into the breakdown lane. She and her friend were standing outside the passenger door when Yiranis Liz, 30, lost control of her car and veered into Bosworth, police said. Family members say the car was going full speed and Bosworth was thrown 90 feet.

Bosworth was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where she is still being treated. Family members say she has a severe head injury, multiple broken vertebrae, a lacerated spleen and liver, bruised ribs, a broken ankle and pulmonary contusions, among other injuries and is lucky to be alive.

On Wednesday night, Bosworth's brother, Christopher Alves, told Boston 25 News, his sister is "doing as well as we could hope. She's a fighter and hanging in. We're all praying for the best."

State police said the passenger is Bosworth's car was not hurt.

Liz, of Providence, is facing several charges including DUI and operating to endanger.

She was arraigned and released on personal recognizance, pending further court action.

Family members say Bosworth is a loving mother, wonderful friend and devoted high school teacher. She had just finished her third Ironman Triathlon days before the crash.

A GoFundMe page has raised more than $35,000 in one day. Family members say donations will help pay her mortgage and care for her children as the medical bills pile up.

"She's going to need all the support she can get," Alves said.
