Suspect who led police on high-speed chase held for dangerousness hearing

WORCESTER, Mass. — A North Shore man who police said led them on a high-speed chase on the Mass Pike was ordered to be held by a judge Wednesday.

Marquis Mitchell, 33, of Peabody, faces numerous charges at his hearing after leading Auburn police on the chase, which ended when Mitchell lost control of his car and crashed in Marlborough.

Police said Mitchell raised red flags when two officers on a routine patrol said they noticed two suspicious cars in a restaurant parking lot. When the officers approached Mitchell, they said he listened to their orders to get out of the car, but did not want to take his hands out of his pockets.

According to court paperwork, Mitchell was "unsteady on his feet, (and) fidgety."

Police said they found cocaine, a gun and loaded magazine in his car, and when they tried to arrest him he resisted, fought back and hit the officers.P

They were able to use a taser on him twice, but that had no effect and Mitchell was able to get into his car and flee.

"We were both terrified that Mr. Mitchell would reach into the area of the loaded magazine and come out with a loaded firearm," said the police report.

Police said Mitchell drove onto the Mass Pike and then I-495, allegedly reaching more than 100 mph. As he tried to exit to Route 20 in Marlborough, he lost control of his Mustang and crashed.

After the crash, Mitchell allegedly got out of the vehicle with a handgun and threw it at state troopers when commanded to put it down.

The Massachusetts State Police troopers on the scene were able to use pepper spray to subdue Mitchell and eventually place him under arrest.

A Westborough police officer did suffer minor injuries from the pepper spray, but no other officers were injured during the altercation or chase.

Police told Boston 25 News that Mitchell has drug convictions in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
