String of thefts at Quincy YMCA has some members concerned

QUINCY Mass. – Police are investigating a string of thefts from the Quincy YMCA, and after several months the problem hasn’t stopped.

Someone has been going into lockers at the Y and taking items out of wallets, but that's not all. At least two people report that the thief or thieves took their keys, unlocked their cars, then returned the keys to the locker room after stealing from the cars.

“It’s not very nice. I think it’s beyond comprehension people have to do that,” YMCA member Rick Boyd said.

Last fall, police said a professional thief walked away with credit cards after dialing open two padlocked lockers.

“On social media there have been posts about break-ins to lockers and people stealing their belongings from cars,” YMC member Janet Bargar said.

“The Y should take responsibility, not full responsibility, but definitely up their policies and security when it comes to making sure everyone’s valuables are safe,” Josh Brooks said.

Quincy police say they are working with the Y to increase security. In the meantime, they are urging visitors to leave valuables at home.

“Other than the security issues, this YMCA is like a sanctuary it’s one of my favorite places,” Bargar said.
