Steamship Authority board calls for external review

OAK BLUFFS, Mass. — The Steamship Authority held a meeting on Martha’s Vineyard Tuesday to address recent mechanical problems that have plagued its ferry service.

There have already been 549 canceled ferry trips between the Islands and Woods Hole this year.

Last year, there were 26.

Most of the Steamship Authority is pushing for in-house improvements to fix the problem.

Those who live on the island want an external review of the agency.

The Steamship Authority announced after the meeting that it is opening up bids for an external review of its ferries.
