Rockland road rage sends one to jail, other to hospital

ROCKLAND, Mass. -- A road rage incident in Rockland sent one man to jail and the other to the hospital Thursday morning, police said.

Kenneth Dickey, 53, is accused of striking the other driver, Brian McKay, 38, with his car, after witnesses reported McKay threatened Dickey with a baseball bat.

Dickey and McKay, both of Brockton, had been driving east on Market Street before the brawl broke out, according to police. Enraged, the two hopped out of their cars.

Brian Arthur, a manager at Burger King, watched the fight play out during his smoke break outside the restaurant shortly after 8 a.m.

“Just smoking a cigarette minding my business, and two guys just started arguing, and it escalated very quickly. And it was tough to make out what they were arguing about,” Arthur said. “One of them came out with a bat. He didn’t swing it at the guy or anything, but they were still arguing, screaming.”

Dickey hopped back into his Lincoln sedan, police said, slammed the car in reverse and hit McKay, knocking him over, before driving away.

“It was pretty scary. He took off the ground a little bit,” Arthur said of McKay being thrown in the air.

A woman who witnessed the incident chased down Dickey in her car and provided officers with information that helped them find and arrest him.

Meanwhile, an ambulance transported McKay to the hospital, where he was treated for injuries that are not life-threatening.

Dickey was arraigned Thursday on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, leaving the scene of a crash causing personal injury, driving to endanger and disorderly conduct.

McKay will be summoned to court on charges of assault with a dangerous and disorderly conduct.
