Residents upset after 'dangerous' dog remains in neighborhood

ATTLEBORO — Residents in Attleboro are upset after a dog is still in their neighborhood, even though the city ordered it to be put down.

For Ryan Gibbault and his lab Brady, walks around the neighborhood aren’t the same.  Last December Gibbault says the dog in question got off leash while his daughter was walking Brady and attacked. Photos show the scars left behind.

“We were lucky that the size of our dog saved his life, but smaller dogs probably wouldn't be as fortunate,” he said.

The “dangerous” dog, a pit bull mix named Buddy, attacked another dog as well.

John Evans said last month Buddy got loose and attacked his Australian Shepherd Charlie, locking his jaws around Charlie’s head, leaving three puncture marks.

“It took four people to get that dog off of mine,” Evans said.

Following the attacks, city officials deemed Buddy a “dangerous” dog and ordered him to be euthanized.

Buddy's owner, Rehoboth police officer Heather Syrett, appealed the decision – and now Buddy's case may go to court.

“He just needs the proper training he just needs to be given that chance,” she told FOX25.

Syrett said her dog only became aggressive after he was attacked by another dog three years ago. She said he's undergoing training to change his behavior.

“He is only aggressive toward dogs, there has never been an issue with people and that's been very overdramatized and just blatantly lied about,” Syrett said.

While the case is pending, Buddy will remain under home containment.
