Proposed medicinal marijuana shop could soon call Newbury Street home

BOSTON — Newbury Street, Boston's popular shopping destination could soon be home to a new medical marijuana dispensary.

A city counselor filed paperwork last week requesting a hearing to hear from the public about it.

That proposed medical marijuana dispensary would be on Newbury between Hereford and Mass Avenue. Boston 25 News spoke with business owners and the proposal is getting a surprisingly positive reaction.

It's known for its high-end shops and restaurants, but soon, Boston's newest medical dispensary may open its doors on Newbury Street.

The nonprofit organization Compassionate Organics wants to open shop here.

Mitch Rosenfield owns the store The Hempest, selling hemp products and smoking accessories. It's located just steps from where the dispensary would be. He thinks the shop would be a welcomed addition.

"I welcome anything like that to the area. We've been trying to push this through for 20 years. Definitely happy to see positive change like that going on,” said Rosenfield.

Courtney Flynn is the manager of Trident Booksellers, which is right across from the proposed pot shop location.

City Councilor Josh Zakim filed paperwork to hold a hearing about opening a dispensary. It's scheduled for next week, June 27th at City Hall and is open to the public, but a lot of the people we spoke with support the shop.

This is all in the very beginning stages, but if it were to become a reality, this would be the second dispensary in the city of Boston.
