• Passenger plane catches fire at O'Hare, runway closed

    CHICAGO - An American Airlines flight bound for Miami from Chicago experienced a malfunction during takeoff Friday and caught fire on the runway.

    Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said American Airlines Flight 383 had departed Chicago for Miami on Friday afternoon when it blew a tire and damaged an engine. Molinaro said the pilot aborted takeoff and everyone was evacuated. According to The Associated Press, Chicago District Chief Juan Hernandez said 20 people suffered minor injuries, as well as a flight attendant.

    American Airlines spokeswoman Leslie Scott said in a brief statement that the plane had "an engine-related mechanical issue." She said buses were en route to take 161 passengers and nine crew members from the runway to the terminal.

    The FAA also said that the runway is closed because of the disabled aircraft.
