One-on-One interview with Elizabeth Warren

(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - In a one-on-one interview with FOX 25's Sharman Sacchetti on Friday, Senate hopeful Elizabeth Warren answered questions about her heritage, character, and what she calls "rough and tumble" politics.

Warren denied the ongoing Native American controversy has put her campaign in jeopardy.

"Why, now, are you ready to answer our questions about character and not a couple of days ago, and not last week?" asks FOX 25's Sharman Sacchetti.

"I think we have been. I have been answering those questions," Warren responds.

The controversy over Warren's ancestry reached a fever pitch this week when Gov. Patrick stepped in to answer a character question Sharman Sacchetti posed to Warren.

Gov. Patrick, speaking in reference to questions of Warren's heritage, replied to Sacchetti, "On behalf of the people of the Commonwealth, we don't care about that subject." That comment had some Mass. residents firing back at the governor, saying he does not speak for them.

When asked if she regretted deferring to the governor that day, Warren replied, "No one has ever accused me of being someone who lays back too much and is hesitant to speak. The governor was a guest here in our campaign headquarters and when the governor wanted to speak, I think it's appropriate to permit a guest to speak, I think it's the right thing to do."

Warren was also asked if she feels people care about the Native American issue in terms of it being a question of character.

"Well, I think that the best way to understand character is what people do. I've been out there now for 25 years, fighting on behalf of working families," says Warren.

The Democratic candidate also reiterated that she has never benefited from claiming minority status, even if her schools may have.

If Warren is elected, she would be the state's first female senator and the first senator who has Native American heritage.
