Milford man uses neon sign to warn others of rental's toxic mold

MILFORD, Mass. — A Milford man is so upset about a mold problem at his rented house, he's letting the whole world know about it.

"My chest was getting tighter... my breathing was getting harder to breathe,” said Stephen Kreig.

Kreig, fearing a tenant might rent the place before the mold problem gets fixed, put posters on the windows with home-made neon signs that read, "This house has toxic mold."

Kreig says he developed those symptoms shortly after he and his fiancé moved into 15 Dilla Street in Milford last year. Later came strange sores on his skin. Eventually, he saw a specialist.

“They said they're 99.99 percent sure they're from mold spores. And they recommended they have a company come in and to see if that's what it was,” said Kreig.

A company came in and its report says it found excessive levels of mold in the attic, on the first floor of the rental and the basement.

“We made copies of it and we brought it down to the Milford Board of Health,” said Kreig.

The Board of Health notified the property owner, sending a letter that read, "you are obligated to consult with a mold remediation professional for guidance and direction in order to address problem areas mentioned in this report...and to correct any conditions that could cause these elevated levels."

Kreig says a mold remediation person did come out, but nothing was done to remove the mold.

“He just did a walk-through like we just did. He looked at all the mold... he said, ‘this is bad bro. Get out of here. Don't take nothing.’ Those were his exact words, said Kreig.

Now Kreig and his fiancé’s couch is on the sidewalk and they are too.

“We're hitting and missing on places to stay right now... with our friends. And hopefully we can get into something soon,” he said.

Milford's Board of Health told Boston 25 News it is seeking a court order to have the mold issue taken care of. The board also let the landlord know that once vacant, the house can't be occupied without its approval.

The landlord did not return Boston 25 News' call.

“This house will seriously make you deathly sick,” said Kreig.
