Massive Greek statues ripped from the concrete outside Fitchburg store

FITCHBURG, Mass. — A pair of massive Greek sculptures were stolen from a consignment store in Fitchburg, according to the store's owners.

This is the second Greek statue theft reported in Worcester County this week alone.

Jack and Samm's Consignment Gallery posted to Facebook Thursday saying a pair of life-size statues were stolen from the sidewalk outside the store on John Fitch Highway.

According to the post, the person who stole the statues -- along with their truck -- was caught on surveillance camera shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday.

The 'rare Greek sculptures' weigh between 350-400 pounds each and were heavily anchored into the concrete. The shop says whoever stole them came prepared to do so.

"Whoever it was that decided to come here and take that brought equipment to both move them and cut them," said Samantha Robinson, the store owner.

Robinson said they had put up the pricey statues less than two months ago. Robinson says they bought both statues for $2,400 and had them securely installed right in time for her store opening on March 30th.

"Our whole scheme was just to have that little extra 'wow' factor and that's what they did for us," said Robinson. "They became the landmark for our store and how people knew who we were and where we were by those statues."

Based on surveillance video from a neighboring business, police say a blue Ford F-150 is of interest.

For now, Robinson has changed the time when lights go off in an effort to rid the bad luck off her business.

"It's just kind of when build something from the ground up and it's your first time doing it, it's a punch in the gut but I mean we're not going to stop what we're doing," said Robinson. "Somebody out there had their reasoning for doing it and we have our reasoning for continuing what we want to do and we're going to give back in the same way we do and not let it slow us down."

Lancaster Police are investigating a similar case in which an 800 pound statue was stolen from a homeowner's front yard that same night.

In the span of three days, four large statues have been stolen, and police believe the crimes are related.

"I do believe that they are connected based on time and relevance," said Lancaster Police Lieutenant Everett Moody. "We've reached out to Fitchburg and we're not only asking other departments for help but also the public for their help."
