MassDOT warns RMV branches closing for 3 days starting Thurs. evening

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is issuing a warning to anyone in need of a car inspection sticker or other services offered by the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, no RMV transactions will take place until Monday. That means no RMV services at branches across the Commonwealth, or AAA offices.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: No RMV Services Starting Thursday

The Brockton RMV opens at 9 a.m., and it, along with other RMV locations, are expected to get busy in anticipation for the closures.

The RMV said it is shutting down non-law enforcement services to install a new computer system that will allow Massachusetts to issue a Real ID.

MORE: What are the new requirements for the 'Real ID?'

We’ve been hearing about the Real ID for more than a decade, ever since the federal government passed a law in 2005 calling for a more secure form of identification.

Starting in 2020, air travelers won’t be able to board a flight with a normal license – only a passport or Real ID.

You need to prove both United States citizenship and Massachusetts residence to get a Real ID.

From the RMV, you’ll need to prove U.S. citizenship or lawful presence.

In the short term, if your license or registration expires between Thursday and Monday, you’ll want to get that taken care of before 7 p.m.
