• Police: Man kills himself after hours-long standoff

    MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Police say a man who opened fire on officers trying to serve an arrest warrant has killed himself following a standoff of several hours.

    Middleborough Police Chief Joseph Perkins says the man "appears to have killed himself."

    Police pulled back, took cover and established a perimeter around the house as the man barricaded himself inside. They tried unsuccessfully to establish contact with the man.

    The regional SWAT team was called to the scene.

    The man was described as a white man in his late 30s or early 40s
