Man detained by ICE released after being in custody for 11 months

A man detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement was released Wednesday, and is beginning the process for a green card.

Edjann Dos Santos, 29, was in custody for 11 months after overstaying his visa, and had petitioned for months to marry his fiancee, Fall River native Katherine Machado, while he was in jail.

The government granted the couple permission last week, and the two wed inside of a jail.

A week later, Dos Santos was released from custody, and an attorney believes that the marriage was a factor in the decision for his release.

The Department of Homeland Security will join in on a motion to reopen, which voids the deportation order and gives Dos Santos a new hearing to seek a green card before immigration court.

A judge will ultimately decide on the application.
