Man arrested for alleged assault on 66-year-old aboard Red Line train

BOSTON — A 31-year-old was arrested and accused of assaulting a 66-year-old man on a Red Line train, police say.

Tukan Manley beat the 66-year-old victim aboard the train, police say, before they found the man slumped over on a bench at South Station.

Police say the man told them the assault stemmed from a confrontation on the train, in which a woman accused the victim of taking photos of her. He told her he didn't take photos, but said Manley took his phone from him and walked away.

When the man followed Manley to get his phone back, he told police the 31-year-old turned and assaulted him.

Prosecutors say Manley kicked the man, breaking his ribs and strangling him.

Makeda Payton, who filmed some of the incident and posted the video to social media, said another person on the train called the man out for taking the inappropriate pictures.

“There was a young lady sitting next to him who started to yell, 'What are you doing? Why are you trying to take pictures of her?'" Payton said.

Manley's lawyer said he was acting in self defense, while the assault victim's lawyer said the opposite.

"“He was taking pictures of the woman on the train across from him, and he was doing it very openly and it was not inappropriate photos," the assault victim's lawyer said.

The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment and a witness turned his phone over to police, which they said was found on the floor of the train after the assault.

Manley was arrested on June 14 and charged with assault and battery on an elderly person, strangulation and malicious destruction of property.

After a court appearance Friday, Manley was released on $500 bail.

Payton said the man deserved the assault for the pictures, but police found no evidence to support the claims and it was disputed in court.
