Man accused of hiding camera in hospital bathroom arrested

BURLINGTON, Mass. – A 21-year-old was arrested Thursday after allegedly placing a pen camera in a bathroom at Lahey Hospital.

Boston 25 News reporter Malini Basu obtained court documents that show there were three people recorded without their knowledge, and they are all female employees at the hospital.

The man accused of placing the recording device is 21-year-old Michael McDermott, a nursing student at UMass Lowell who worked at the hospital.

McDermott is facing a number of charges including wiretapping and photographing an unsuspecting nude person.

Last week, a housekeeper found a pen camera in an employee bathroom on 6 east. She told authorities she found the spying device hidden between two empty toilet paper rolls.

“She said that when she pressed the pen, a light came on and she could see a lens on the pen which she said was facing the toilet,” court documents said.

According to investigators, the hidden camera saved images of McDermott’s face, his Lahey Clinic ID badge and females using the bathroom.

We tried to get a statement from McDermott’s fiancee's family, but they asked us politely to get off of their property.

McDermott has been fired from the hospital, and is expected to be arraigned at a later date.
