Lynn police still seeking suspect after October attack

LYNN, Mass. – Nearly two months after a woman was attacked in broad daylight on Franklin Street in Lynn, police are still working to identify a suspect.

The victim was walking home just before noon on Oct. 19 when the attack happened.

“She passed by a male suspect and then shortly thereafter she noticed that that male was walking behind her,” Lynn Police Lt. Michael Kmiec said.

She had made it to Franklin and Albany streets, when she says the complete stranger following her, who had previously made a derogatory comment, tackled her.

“The male attacked her from behind, pushing her to the ground. And then she as struck in the head several times with what she believed to be a rock,” Kmiec said.

Moments before the attack, surveillance cameras from a nearby store had captured the suspect peeking in after the victim had entered, police say.

“I’m amazed. I’m surprised, because our neighborhood today is a really nice neighborhood. It’s the same kind of neighborhood I moved into in 1970,” neighbor Joanne Hatzelamprou said.

As the victim screamed for help on the ground, the attacker got off her and pointed a gun at her, she says.

“A nearby resident came out, at which time he observed the suspect leaving the area and again the suspect brandished what they believe to be a handgun toward the witness as well,” Kmiec said.

Detectives investigating the disturbing case haven’t been able to identify the suspect. That’s why they’re asking the public for help.

Police believe the suspect is between 20 and 30. If you have any information about him or the October incident, police urge you to call them at 781-595-2000.
