‘Truly commendable’: Winthrop police officer saves choking infant minutes after CPR training

WINTHROP, Mass. — Beautiful baby Savannah is recovering Tuesday night after she choked on her formula and stopped breathing. But she’s ok thanks to a Winthrop Police Officer’s quick action.

“Thank you, Officer Robert Jaworski! I appreciate you so much,” said Daniel Barnes, Savannah’s Grandfather.

Officer Jaworski, a 31-year veteran of the Winthrop Police Department, had just finished his state-mandated CPR training ten minutes before the 911 call that Savannah was choking. “She started turning red and then she got blue and my wife was trying to pat her on the back to clear the airway,” said Barnes.

Barne’s wife called 911 and minutes later Officer Jaworski came to the rescue.

“He was the first one to arrive,” said Winthrop Police Chief Terence Delehanty.

Officer Jaworski immediately started CPR.

“Once Officer Jaworski showed up everything worked out well. He patted her a little harder and everything came out and it was so good,” said Barnes.

Winthrop’s Chief says Officer Jaworski is a father and understands how critical seconds are when a child stops breathing.

“And to be able to help somebody and watch them come back and start breathing again is so rewarding,” said Chief Delehanty.

On Tuesday night the one-month-old baby is resting with her mother at Mass General Hospital.
