LAWRENCE, Mass. - A man is dead in Lawrence after being shot multiple times, the police chief said.

Officers responded to a call for a person shot on Hampshire Street, just blocks from an elementary school, late on Wednesday afternoon.
They said the shooting happened around 6:15 p.m.

The victim, only identified as a man in his 30s, died from his injuries.

A witness at the scene said he heard seven shots and saw a man on the ground covered in blood. He says he then saw officers doing CPR on the victim, but were unsuccessful.
A neighbor said this kind of crime is unheard of for their neighborhood.
It is still unclear what could have prompted the shooting, and police are actively investigating this homicide.
No arrests have been made and no further information has been released.
