Hyannis woman charged with stealing from Sgt. Gannon charity event

HYANNIS, Mass. — A Hyannis woman has been charged with larceny after stealing a silent auction item initially intended to raise funds on behalf of fallen Yarmouth Police Department Sergeant Sean Gannon.

Maureen E. Wiggin, 56, of Hyannis, was caught on surveillance footage stealing an item from a silent auction for a charity fundraiser in honor of Sgt. Gannon at the Cape Codder restaurant.

Police responded to a call for a reported larceny at the popular dining spot at around 10:30 p.m. on Friday.

Tickets for the event, entitled "Back the Blue/A Night to Remember Sean" cost $25, which included a live auction and raffles, where all proceeds were donated to the Yarmouth Police Fundraiser.

Witnesses told Barnstable Police officers that one of the silent auction items had gone missing.

The item in question was a blue box containing golf balls, baseball hats and a variety of t-shirts.

Security footage showed Wiggin taking the box from a table and leaving the venue.

Upon being questioned at her home, Wiggin denied any wrongdoing and was uncooperative, but the item was eventually recovered from the trunk of her car.
