Hundreds run 5K race in memory of Sgt. Sean Gannon

YARMOUTH, Mass. — Hundreds of runners hit the streets for the 11th annual Yarmouth Police 5K race on Sunday morning.

This year, participants ran in memory of Sergeant Sean Gannon, more than a month after he was shot and killed in the line of duty.

It was a special day for family and fellow officers who said today was all about moving forward.

Sergeant Gannon was this year's race director, for an event that was always so near and dear to him.

"Today is a wonderful outpouring of support. it's terrific seeing the communities all coming together to really show how important law enforcement is for them," said Patrick Gannon, Sgt. Gannon's father.

32-year-old Gannon and his K9 partner Nero were shot in April while serving a warrant on Cape Cod.

Gannon died from his injuries, but Nero underwent emergency surgery and survived. The police chief says K9 officer Nero is doing very well and is full of energy.

"Sean was all about the right thing and having fun, so to him today I'm sure he's with us, I just feel it, I know it, he's watching it, enjoying it," said Denise Gannon, Sgt. Gannon's mother.

Officers from all across the area flooded Cape Cod to show their support. Chief Fredrickson said it was an important day to remember Sgt. Gannon in such a positive way.

"Today is a day for happiness, this is for Sean, this is for his family, his wife, his siblings, our police department, our community, cape cod, Massachusetts," said Yarmouth Police Chief Frank Fredrickson.

The money raised today will go to several local charities.
