Holliston crosswalk ripped up more than 2 years after woman struck, killed

HOLLISTON, Mass. — A symbolic milestone for a construction project in Holliston. The crosswalk where a woman was struck and killed more than two years ago was ripped from the street.

Nearly two-and-a-half years ago, the crosswalk near the Holliston library was the scene of a pedestrian accident that killed Karen Evers. Her death caused the pot to boil on a long-simmering issue in town.

Crosswalks on busy Washington Street never force traffic to stop.

"Not everyone sees and if one car stops then another car might try to go around them," said Holliston resident Laura Kinney.

There are two main problems with the current crosswalks; the lights are mounted up high so it's hard for drivers to see them, and they blink yellow, so some drivers don't think to stop.

After Evers' death, residents voted for actual stop lights and functional crosswalks downtown. That installation is proceeding now.

Monday, the crosswalk was ripped in slabs from the street, a small part of the overall project.
