Good Samaritans save drowning teen in Falmouth

FALMOUTH, Mass. — It was a scary scene at a Falmouth pond where a teenager nearly drowned, but a quick-thinking grandmother and a group of swimmers made all the difference.

Joan Brosnan was at Falmouth’s Jenkins Pond when she saw a swimmer struggling and flailing in the water.

“I yelled to my grandson, ‘Throw him the boogie board. Do not go near him, throw him the boogie board,” said Brosnan.

When she saw her grandson get too close, she jumped in to help, and instantly got in trouble herself.

“So, I jumped into the water and I tried to hand him the boogie board, but he opted to take me and drop me under, so it was tough,” said Brosnan.

Soon, Joan was struggling with the teen, but she didn't give up.

“And I had to fight free so I could get the boogie board to him again. But by then I was holding him by his hair, trying to pull him to the top, but I couldn't, he was too big,” said Brosnan.

Luckily, a man on the beach saw what was happening and jumped into help and together, Joan and the man got the teen ashore. Once they put him on his side, the teen spit out water and began to breathe.

“There was a community attempt. Everyone from the lake came out and tried to help so it was nice to see the community pull together,” said Brosnan.

The teen was taken to Falmouth Hospital for further treatment.
