Gas prices expected to keep soaring

By now, you've probably noticed gas prices are going up. The cost for a gallon of regular is soaring and almost 50 cents higher than this time last year.

According to AAA, a gallon of regular in Massachusetts will cost you $2.82, up from the $2.63 it was a month ago. This time last year, gas was $2.37.

Mary Maguire, spokesperson for AAA Northeast, say the price of crude oil has almost tripled in recent months and is driving up gasoline costs everywhere.

She says the worst is yet to come.

"At AAA, we're forecasting we may see another dime added to the price before Memorial Day weekend," said Maguire.

When the prices go up, that's when people really start to pay attention to promotions and discounts that are out there. Several companies offer them, like Costco and Stop and Shop with their "gas rewards" program.

John Clough used his reward points to shave off 60 cents a gallon. Multiply that by 17 gallons and he saved $10 on a tank of gas.

"It definitely saves. I mean, I just paid $2.15 a  gallon so as long as you keep going to Stop and Shop and gassing up here, it's worth it," said Clough.

Others like Robert Dunn just change their driving habits.

"I don't go out as much. I don't drive as much. You try to budget your money so that you can buy food, groceries and fill up your car if you can. I feel sorry for folks who have SUVs," said Dunn.

One Roxbury resident refuses to bow down to fuel costs.

"I just have to pay the price. I'm not going to let it stop me. I'm too used to being able to go where I want to go when I want to go," said Marlania.

The good news is, according to AAA, we could see those prices start to go back down after Memorial Day.
