Former First Lady Barbara Bush remembered fondly in Kennebunkport

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine. – Former First Lady Barbara Bush has died at the age of 92 while at her home in Texas.

A wife of one President and a mom to another, Barbara spent four years as First Lady, from 1989-1993, and eight years as Second Lady, from 2001-2009.

During summers Barbara and her husband George H.W. Bush would live in Kennebunkport, Maine where the were beloved members of the community known for being involved in the town.

The Bushes, and Barbara in particular, were especially involved at Maine Medical Center and the Children’s Hospital was named in her honor.

“We all stood a little taller because we were associated with Mrs. Bush. Her unwavering support for children’s health and deep commitment to the hospital that bears her name moved many to share her passion and improve the health of our state’s youngest and most vulnerable patients,” said Rich Petersen, Maine Medical Center President and CEO.

Across New England, the legacy of the Bushes is felt. They often joined sports teams of all levels as spectators and to participate in ceremonies.
