More than a dozen hospitalized after hazmat situation in Salem

SALEM, Mass. — Firefighters responded to a hazmat situation in Salem, according to the state fire marshal's office.

The firefighters were responding to the Thermal Circuits building on Technology Way for the situation late Sunday night, and no other details were immediately confirmed.

In a press conference late Sunday night, Deputy Chief Alan Dionne of the Salem Fire Department said 15 people were hospitalized after the situation and three others were taken to a Boston hospital. Others were reportedly taken to other hospitals for various symptoms.

There was an incident earlier in the day at the same building that Dionne said took about four hours to take care of, and workers returned to the building.

After the incident earlier, workers begin having symptoms later in the night. Upon arrival, firefighters saw some injured, some others being carried, and some being attended to on the side of the road.

The Salem Fire Department activated a mass casualty report incident, and brought in support from the region.

Respiratory issues, nausea, burning eyes and vary levels of consciousness were listed as symptoms reported throughout the incident.

The Lynn Fire Department tweeted that they were currently covering in Salem for the ongoing incident.

They followed up by saying they are standing by at Union Hospital in case any help is needed.
