Woman suspected of drunken driving crashes through mailboxes

TAUNTON, Mass. — A woman was arrested after allegedly driving drunk and crashing her vehicle through several mailboxes, smashing a car's rear window, and hitting a tree.

Police said 39-year-old Amy Rebello-McCarthy was allegedly speeding down Staple Street in Taunton when she drove off the road and struck several mailboxes.

Afterwards, she allegedly drove across the street onto a lawn and smashed into a new well cover.

Rebello-McCarthy was laughing, drooling and slurring her words when officers approached, according to a post on the Taunton Police Department Facebook page.

Police said there was a male passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and when they arrived on the scene he was trying to get the car unstuck from a tree.

When officers approached the male, they saw a gun in his waistband, however after getting him in custody they learned it was and air soft replica. The man was placed in protective custody.

During a search of Rebello-McCarthy’s belongings, officers discovered she had a bearded dragon in her bra. The animal was turned over to animal control.

Rebello-McCarthy was arrested and charged with OUI of liquor, driving to endanger and a marked lane violation.

Police said she was just shy of doubling the legal limit of 0.08.
