Driver crashes into Officer Sean Collier Memorial

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A permanent tribute to the MIT Police officer killed by the Boston Marathon bombers was damaged overnight.

Just after 12:30 a.m., a driver went off the road and took out a tree before hitting the memorial for Officer Sean Collier. The Officer Sean Collier Memorial is located on the MIT Campus near the intersection of Main and Vassar streets in Cambridge.

The 52-year-old driver was taken to Mass. General with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It's unclear what caused the driver to crash or if they will face charges.

Police say the memorial sustained minimal damage.

Collier was killed by the Tsarnaev brothers as police searched for them in the days after the marathon bombings. He was sitting in his cruiser when they approached him several times without warning.

The memorial for Collier was built and dedicated in 2015.
