Cargo ship breaks free from South Boston pier

BOSTON — A cargo ship that was docked in South Boston overnight broke free and floated into open waters.

Sky25 was over that ship, which has since been anchored, but it was nowhere near South Boston.

It was located in the waters between Winthrop and Nahant.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the crew was onboard at Conley Terminal just after midnight when all 12 lines that were holding it to the dock broke.

Boston 25 News spoke with one of the crew members who shared video from onboard the ship.

A longshoreman was on the pier said the winds were whipping at the time.

The Coast Guard is investigating, but said tugboats were able to corral the ship and tow it to a safe location.
